Luis Gonzalez’s hit against Mariano won Game Seven of the 2001 World Series for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The fact that the Yankees went to another Series just a few weeks later was perceived as a sign of hope by New Yorkers.

Mariano had another great season, with 50 saves and 4 victories. His ERA was 2.34. The Yankees beat the Oakland A’s and the Seattle Mariners in the playoffs and then played the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Series. The Series went back and forth, and it all came down to Game 7 in Phoenix.

In this game, the Yankees were leading 2-1 going into the ninth. Mariano had come into the game in the eighth inning and struck out the side. Who better to have on the mound to help win this final game? It did not work out that way.

Mariano gave up a hit to start the inning, then made a fielding error. A couple of batters later, he gave up a double, which tied the game.

Next, he hit a batter and the bases were loaded. Finally, Mariano gave up one last hit to Luis Gonzalez, and Arizona won the game and the Series.

Mariano was sad, but he talked to the press and took responsibility. He did the best he could, but on that day, it was not enough. As usual, he believed that the Lord guided life and that, even though he did not understand why this had happened, there was a reason for the event.
